Counseling & Wellness at MECA

MECA counselors are committed to assisting students achieve their personal and academic goals and enhance their self-understanding. We provide students with support and encouragement in a nonjudgmental, caring setting. We can also assist with referrals to doctors, therapists, and other off-campus resources. 

Counseling is free, confidential, and available every weekday at MECA. Counseling office hours vary and are posted on the counseling office doors.

Students seek counseling for many different reasons, including the following:
 
+ Anxiety, grief, and loss
 
+ Adjustment problems (transitions, homesickness, etc.) Relationship challenges issues
 
+ Depression, sexual identity issues 
 
+ Disordered eating, Substance use 
 
 
Counseling services include:
 
+ Mental health assessment
 
+ Individual counseling
 
+ Couples and group counseling
 
+ Crisis intervention
 
+ Consultation with members of the MECA community, family, providers
 
+ Psychoeducation
 
+ Referrals to appropriate resources and local providers
 

For crisis support, you may do any of the following, depending on the nature and severity of your concern:

+ If you live on campus, consult an RA.

+ Call the MECA “red" (emergency) phone: (207) 228-3474.

+ Call the local crisis line: 774-HELP (207-774-4357).

+ Call 911.

At MECA, counselors are available on-site during the academic year to provide free and confidential clinical counseling, crisis intervention, and outreach to students.  They are also available to consult with faculty and staff.  Students who would prefer to see a counselor off campus, may contact the Counseling Office at 207.699.5056 for referrals to local providers.  The counseling office also maintains a list of local psychiatrists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, and primary care physicians.

If it is after hours and your need is urgent, please call 911 or call 207.774.HELP (207.774.4357) for 24 hr. crisis support, or visit your local emergency room. The ER closest to MECA is at Mercy Hospital, 144 State Street, at the corner of State and Spring Streets.  You may also call the MECA answering service at 207.842.4758.
